Pattaya City Council Gives Updates on Major Drainage Projects and Jomtien Beach Landscape Development and Roadwork

PATTAYA, Thailand – On Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, the Pattaya City Council’s Public Works and Utilities Committee met at City Hall to review the progress of ongoing construction projects for the 2025 fiscal year. The meeting, chaired by Mr. Banlue Kullavanich, focused on critical infrastructure developments, including the South Pattaya Canal drainage system and the Jomtien Beach landscape improvement project.

The committee addressed ongoing issues with the South Pattaya Canal’s wastewater drainage system, which has been plagued by problems such as reverse water flow, leading to stagnant, foul-smelling water that has disturbed residents along the canal.

The issue was raised in a prior city council meeting, prompting plans for a new drainage system. Representatives from the Sanitation Engineering Department reported that the project is currently in the design phase, with construction to begin upon completion of the designs.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bancha Kullavanich, Secretary of the Pattaya City Council, inquired about the Jomtien Beach landscape improvement project, which has had big public attention. The project involves constructing drainage pipes, expanding road surfaces, upgrading sidewalks, and installing large 1,500 mm and 2,000 mm pipes. Officials reported that the project is approximately 60% complete. Challenges include underground utility lines, though these have been largely resolved. A notable issue is non-compliance with the new one-way traffic system along Jomtien Beach Road, with some residents still driving against the flow.

The Sanitation Engineering Department provided updates on 11 ongoing projects for the 2025 fiscal year, including:
  • Eastern Railway Road Project (Phase 1, Pornprapanimit to Siam Country Club): 90% complete.
  • Thepprasit Soi 9 to Jomtien Beach Connection: 80% complete, with delays due to soft soil causing pipe subsidence.
  • Jomtien Beach Landscape Improvement: Set to conclude by October 16, 2025.
  • Eastern Railway Road Drainage System (Phase 2): Ongoing.
  • Sukhumvit Pattaya Soi 67 Road and Drainage: 80% complete, with pending work on manholes and road surfacing.
  • Sukhumvit Pattaya Soi 85 to Railway Road Connection: 80% complete, with pipe installation ongoing and a contract end date of mid-July 2025.
The committee stated the importance of addressing these challenges promptly to ensure the timely completion of these vital infrastructure projects, which aim to enhance Pattaya’s urban environment and quality of life for its residents.
